Abstract

"In this book we have brought together research from international clinicians, practitioners and researchers from various backgrounds and communities. Some of the papers were presented at the annual Stop Youth Suicide conference in Lexington, Kentucky in November 2019 and some at the Fifth International Conference on Child Health, Development and Welfare in Jerusalem, Israel during December 2019. The topics in this international potpourri of presentations are from a college experience program for people with intellectual disabilities in New York, migration from South Korea, which has emerged as one of the world's largest diaspora nations, discussions on abuse head trauma and adolescent suicide to risk factors for impaired early childhood development in rural India. We hope this collection of papers will be of interest to our international audience and hope you will find useful information from this research"--

Abstract

The idea behind this book - devoted to the relations between adults and children - emerged within a specific educational experience launched in an experimental manner in 2006 by the faculty of educational science of Florence University and now in its fourth edition. These are teaching courses held in the evening and on Saturdays to make it easier for students with daytime jobs to attend the lessons. The quest for new forms of organisation was accompanied by a meditation on teaching, which brought out several very interesting educational themes which were effectively transversal to the various disciplines. This book presents the results of this methodological approach, aimed at fostering a conscious, reflective and personal learning. As the title suggests, the essays are designed to focus the question of the educational relationship within a multidisciplinary perspective. Us-them, to remind ourselves that adults have a fundamental and inescapable responsibility. The relationship is typically asymmetrical, with special features and decidedly variable over time. It has in fact been marked for centuries by a failure to recognise the needs of the youngsters and their own subjectivity, to the point of arriving at disturbing levels of violence and coercion. Such cases have been justly referred to a 'black pedagogy', which sadly is far from being everywhere a thing of the past, and even in Italy has left deep and persistent traces. For these reasons the study of the educational relationship has numerous relevant aspects of interest, all extremely topical, and represents a fundamental argument that adults must consciously address. Educators and teachers, parents and students, can all thus enhance their sensitivity and competence with a view to consolidating the reflective practices that are now considered absolutely indispensable for those who live in contact with children and adolescents.

Abstract

This Report is one of the first comprehensive studies on young children in India. It focuses on children under 6 years of age and presents key aspects of their well-being and development. With the highest number of neonatal, infant and under-5 deaths in the world, there is an urgent need to address issues that continue to affect the young child in India. This volume: Introduces two young child indices aggregating selected indicators to separately track child outcomes and child circumstances. Provides an account of the current situation of the young child in terms of physical and cognitive development, access to care, disadvantaged children and major issues that have led to the continued neglect of this age group. Explores the policy and legal framework, fiscal space and the role and obligations of key stakeholders, including the state, private sector, civil society, media and the family. Highlights key recommendations and action points that can help to improve the ecosystem for early childhood care and development. Drawing on specially commissioned technical background papers, supplemented by extensive field experience of Mobile Creches in childcare, this Report will be of interest to practitioners, policymakers and influencers, think tanks and researchers of public policy, development studies, human rights, sociology and social anthropology, as well as general readers. Abstract

Annotation Play benefits all children, and has protective and preventative functions. Yet there is not a single, universally agreed definition of child health, nor of children's play. This makes insights from around the globe, highlighting the under-recognized link between the two, highly valuable. Theorists and practitioners evidence the healing power of play and positive health outcomes through interventions ranging from hospital clowning in Palestine, health promotion in remote Australia, playrooms in Brazilian hospitals, palliative care in South Africa, therapeutic work with neglected and abused Romanian children, to restoring children's health following natural disasters in Japan, and changes in nomadic communities in Iran. Early years and teenage play are discussed, and both physical and mental health and well-being. This wonderful collection aims to inspire further discussion and sharing of good practices.

Abstract

Originally published in 1966, the two authors combined skill in their subject with experience of teaching it to students in Africa and elsewhere. Their aim was threefold. First and most important to emphasise to teachers in training how essential it is to regard children as individuals, each with a character and problems resulting from heredity and environment. Secondly, to give the teacher enough knowledge of psychology to help him to understand each pupil's learning process and behaviour. Thirdly, to stimulate the teacher to observation, enquiry and thought. Each chapter ends with suggested exercises, discussion points and reading references. The book was one of a series offered to Africa teachers in training. The series was designed to help those who were called upon to teach the many subjects of the primary school curriculum or two or more subjects with junior forms of secondary schools. It was dedicated to the proposition that giving a good basic education to a country's children is vital to its development programme.
